The night was colder than most, the moon hidden behind a thick veil of clouds, as if even it feared what was to come. The wind howled through the empty streets, a whispering promise of death in the air. There, at the edge of town, in a shadowed alley, stood a figure—helpless, broken, and abandoned. His name was Caleb. Once a man of dreams and hope, now nothing more than a husk of the person he used to be.
His body trembled, not from the cold, but from something darker, more insidious. His breath came in ragged gasps, his chest rising and falling with the desperate need for air that felt just out of reach. But more than the physical pain, it was the torment of betrayal that gnawed at his very soul. He had been left for dead, discarded by those who had once called him a friend. He had nowhere to go, nowhere to hide from the truth that crushed him beneath its weight.
And yet, as his eyes fluttered shut, darkness crept closer, like an old friend coming to take him away. "Close your eyes," he whispered to himself, trying to push the endless pain out of his mind. "So many days gone by, easy to find what's wrong, harder to find what's right." His voice cracked as he spoke, the words barely audible above the wind’s mournful cries.
In the silence that followed, a shadow moved toward him—unnatural, like something that didn’t belong. Caleb’s eyes snapped open, locking onto the figure that had appeared out of the darkness. A man—or something that looked like one. Tall, impossibly thin, with skin as pale as death itself. His smile was wide, predatory. There was no warmth in it, no comfort. Just hunger. A hunger that could only be sated by souls like Caleb’s.
“You look lost,” the man’s voice was smooth, deep, and almost soothing, though Caleb could feel the venom in every syllable. The stranger’s cold, dead eyes glinted with malice. “Helpless, even.”
Caleb’s heart pounded in his chest. “I believe in you," he whispered, though the words tasted bitter on his tongue. "I can show you that... I can see right through all your empty lies." He had heard stories about beings like this, creatures who thrived on despair, feeding on the broken spirits of men. But in this moment, he couldn’t find the strength to fight. His body was too weak, his mind too clouded.
The man’s laugh was like a blade scraping against stone, sharp and unnerving. “Lies, you say? You think you can see me?” He leaned closer, the stench of death filling the air. “You’ve seen nothing yet, Caleb. You’ve only just begun to understand what it means to truly see."
Caleb recoiled, but there was no escaping the grip of fear that tightened around his chest. “I won’t stay long in this world so wrong,” he whispered, his voice faltering. "Say goodbye." The words spilled out like a confession, a final surrender. He could feel the weight of his own soul slipping away, his resolve crumbling as the presence of the devil grew stronger around him.
The stranger stepped even closer, now inches from Caleb’s face. He could feel the man’s cold breath on his skin, each exhale like the brush of death’s icy fingers. “Don’t you dare look at him in the eye,” the devil whispered, as if the words themselves carried a curse. Caleb tried to look away, but the power in the stranger’s gaze was magnetic, forcing him to lock eyes with the demon in front of him.
The coldness burned through Caleb’s veins, a creeping frost that spread from his chest to his limbs. He trembled, a wave of nausea crashing over him as the life seemed to drain from his body, pulled away by the man before him. "Trembling, crawlin' across my skin," Caleb murmured through clenched teeth, feeling his soul being torn from him, piece by agonizing piece.
The devil’s lips curled into a smile as he saw Caleb’s struggle, savoring the pain, savoring the fear. “Feeling my cold dead eyes on you, stealing your life,” he taunted, his voice low and mocking. Caleb could feel the darkness growing inside him, the hunger that had begun to claw at his insides like a beast desperate to feed.
But somewhere deep inside, a flicker of defiance remained. It was weak, barely there, but it was enough to keep him from sinking into total despair. “I believe in you,” he whispered again, his voice strained. "I can show you that..."
The stranger’s smile faltered for a moment, a flicker of curiosity passing through his eyes. But then, the moment passed, and the pressure on Caleb’s chest increased. The dark figure leaned in closer, the words falling from his lips like a death sentence.
"You’ll last long enough to understand, Caleb. Long enough to know what it truly means to dance with the devil."
And as the man spoke, the world around Caleb seemed to dissolve into nothingness. His body felt heavy, his mind spinning in a chaotic whirl of thoughts and emotions that threatened to overwhelm him. "I won't last long in this world so wrong," he gasped, barely able to draw breath. “Say goodbye...”
For a fleeting second, it felt like the world around him was shifting, warping into something different. His vision blurred, the edges of reality fading into an overwhelming void. The devil’s grip tightened, pulling him deeper into the darkness.
And then, everything stopped. The wind ceased its howling, the ground beneath him solidified, and the devil’s presence vanished. Caleb found himself standing in a strange, unfamiliar place. The air was thick with the scent of decay, but there was no one else in sight. He looked around, his mind reeling, still uncertain of what had just happened. The world felt... wrong.
But before he could comprehend what was going on, he heard a soft, almost imperceptible whisper in his ear. “Hold on,” the voice said, full of warmth and sadness, and it was the only thing that kept him tethered to this world. “Hold on.”
But he could feel it—deep inside. He could feel the life slipping away, fading into nothingness. He didn’t know how much longer he could hold on. The weight of everything—his past, his choices, the betrayal—pressed down on him like a mountain. He was so tired.
"Goodbye," he whispered, as the darkness closed in around him once more.
And as he let go, the world faded into black.
